Mexico vs USA
World Cup Qualifiers – North & Central America
Date: Monday, 12th June 2017
Kick-off at: 01:30 UK / 02:30 CET
Venue: Estadio Azteca, Mexico City.
The US put themselves on pretty solid footing in the CONCACAF Hexagonal on Thursday night, beating Trinidad and Tobago 2-0 in Colorado to move into third place in the Hex with a 2-2-1 record. That miserable 0-2-0 start to the final round of CONCACAF qualifying is firmly in the rearview, with the US now just one point behind second-place Costa Rica and a full three points ahead of fifth-place Honduras.
They don’t need points at Mexico on Sunday night, but man, would a result at the Azteca be nice.
The US, of course, have never won a World Cup qualifier at Mexico. El Tri are famously nasty at home, posting a monstrous 40-2-7 all-time record in qualifiers in Mexico. They’ve started the Hex in fantastic fashion, with their 3-0 home win against Honduras on Thursday night pushing them to 4-0-1 through five games.
El Tri beat the US in the first match of the Hex, breaking their Columbus curse with a 2-1 win over the Americans in Ohio back in November. They’re in form, very talented and, with 100,000 strong at their back in the Azteca, will give the US their toughest match of the Hexagonal on Sunday.
Mexico
As expected, Mexico are atop the qualification group with 13 points collected. They are yet to be beaten with 4 wins and a draw and with the goal difference of 8:1. On Friday, they welcomed Honduras whom they beat 3-0.
After two games at Azteca, El Tricolor are yet to concede as they beat Costa Rica 2-0 prior to outclassing Honduras.
USA
USMNT registered the crucial 2-0 victory over Trinidad & Tobago in the previous round. Currently, they are in the 3rd place of CONCACAF qualifying group with 7 points and they will be looking to seal one of the first three places and avoid inter-confederation play-off. The United States are yet to pick up a win in the campaign as they fell in Costa Rica with 4-0 and only draw Panama 1-1.
Mexico vs USA: Head-to-head
USMNT is without a competitive win in Mexico since 2002. Their previous meeting dates back to December 2016, when Mexico grabbed the full prize in the last minutes of the match. However, the last two meetings in Mexico ended as a draw after the regular 90 minutes.
Mexico vs USA: Prediction
Mexico are the superior team in CONCACAF and they are likely to earn three points against unconvincing US national team. Pulisic carried USMNT in the previous round and the Mexicans are likely to shut him off as the other US’ players are not as threatening as Borussia Dortmund’s prodigy. A draw would perfectly suit the visiting side, but Mexico’s aspirations are certainly higher at the moment.
